Transitive’s QuickTransit® Virtualization Software Allows Applications Written for Solaris™/SPARC® Platforms to Run on Linux®-Based Intel® Xeon® and Intel Itanium® PlatformsModern Hardware Platforms Provide Significant Performance Improvements for Existing Software Applications Los Gatos, Calif. – June 27, 2006 – Transitive™ Corporation, the leading provider of software that enables transportability of applications across multiple processor and operating system (OS) pairs, today announced the first two products in a series of new QuickTransit® products that are being developed as part of its new Solaris™/SPARC® Migration Initiative:
The new products are the first results of the collaboration with Intel® announced in March of this year to accelerate the migration from RISC-based platforms to Intel-based platforms, and they allow Solaris/SPARC applications to run without any source code or binary changes on Linux/Xeon- and Linux/Itanium 2-based servers respectively. The products dramatically reduce the barriers IT organizations face when migrating Solaris/SPARC workloads to Linux/Xeon- and Linux/Itanium 2-based servers. Additional future products in the series will allow Solaris/SPARC applications to run on various other hardware platforms. “One of the biggest obstacles to migrating from one server to another is getting your internally developed and commercial applications ported to the new server,” said Bob Wiederhold, President and CEO of Transitive Corporation. “In a large IT organization this can take years to accomplish. Since Solaris/SPARC applications can now run on your target platform without the burden of porting, this migration barrier is eliminated and IT organizations can immediately realize the full benefits of their new strategic server platform.” “We have evaluated application software running through QuickTransit on both Xeon- and Itanium 2 platforms and have been impressed by the fact that applications ‘just work’ and do so with incredible performance,” said Kirk Skaugen, Vice President, Digital Enterprise Group at Intel Corporation. “Transitive’s technology is poised to play a key role in eliminating barriers to server migration and allowing end-customers to move to industry standard architectures from Intel.” Transitive’s QuickTransit hardware virtualization products allow Solaris/SPARC applications to run with full functionality, transparent interactive and graphics performance, and computational performance that is typically faster than the fastest Solaris/SPARC machines. The use of software applications running through QuickTransit is completely transparent to the end-user and easily managed by IT system administrators. Commercial and in-house software development teams can easily support their applications running through QuickTransit because no source code or binary changes are required. Transitive expects to deliver the first of the new products, QuickTransit for Solaris/SPARC-to-Linux/Xeon, in Q3 2006. The second product, QuickTransit for Solaris/SPARC-to-Linux/Itanium, is expected to be available by the end of the year 2006. The products will be available to end-users through Transitive’s direct sales force as well as through computer companies, systems integrators, and IT services companies. Specific distribution partners are expected to be named in the next few months. “ The advantages of the virtualization trend are many and varied, but many datacenters may be forced to launch multiple virtualization strategies or expensive porting projects to account for the multiple platforms they maintain. Cross-platform virtualization eliminates this obstacle, allowing datacenters to take a single, simple approach to virtualization that delivers the maximum benefits from initiatives related to server consolidation, disaster recovery, energy efficiency, and legacy migration. By enabling immediate software migration to chosen strategic server platforms, we believe that Transitive can help eliminate much of the difficulty and expense that companies face when upgrading hardware.”
